VETERANS VISIT GES -

Students, teachers and staff from Gainfield Elementary School in Southbury celebrated Veterans' Day with a ceremony performed by a group of veterans and the display of a Wall of Honor Monday, November 10. Principal Dr. Len Tomasello invited local veterans to attend and add their names to the Wall of Honor, which includes the names of hundreds of veterans related to the families of Gainfield students or other families in the community. Participating veterans, posing by the Wall of Honor, were Charlie Fee (left), Jim Purcell, John LeCastre, Leonard Benedetto and Jerry Lukowski.


Selectmen Expect to Confirm
New Member Thursday

SOUTHBURY - Southbury's reputation for zealous volunteers is golden and never more so than in the past week when nine citizens applied to serve out the vacant one-year term on the Board of Selectmen caused by the elevation of Selectman Bill Davis to the position of first selectman following Mark Cooper's resignation.

Sitting members of the board had, the week before, rejected the nomination of Chad Landmon by the Republican Town Committee on the grounds that they didn't know who he was.

Board Approves Lease
WASHINGTON - First Selectman Mark Lyon moved to approve a short-term lease with Region 12 for Washington Primary School at the November 13 Board of Selectmen meeting.

Selectmen unanimously approved the motion.

Mr. Lyon told the board that fellow Region 12 members, Bridgewater and Roxbury, have agreed to sign a lease extension that will run until June 2009.

Washington-Warren Town Line
Cell Tower Balloon Test Slated

WASHINGTON - First Selectman Mark Lyon has been notified that Optasite will conduct a balloon test tomorrow, November 20, weather permitting, at two locations on Rabbit Hill Road in Warren, just across the Washington town line.

The company has applied to the Connecticut Siting Council to build a new cell tower some 250 feet from the Washington town line on property owned by Luke Tanner.

Middlebury Residents Approve
Eight Items at Referendum

MIDDLEBURY - Voters approved each of the eight items on the ballot at the Wednesday, November 12, referendum at Shepardson.

The ratification of an August 2006 agreement between developer Middlebury Land Associates, LLC, and the town, executed by Edward B. St. John when he was first selectman, passed by 397 votes, 764 to 367.

Zoners Deny Change of Use
Request for Dunkin' Donuts

WOODBURY - The Zoning Commission has determined that the Dunkin' Donuts proposed for Woodbury Green South, 787-807 Main St. South, reflected a significant enough change over the intended use approved in 2006.

The commission, meeting Wednesday, November 12, unanimously voted not to authorize Zoning Enforcement Officer Joe Chapman to issue a permit for a change of use that would have allowed the Dunkin' Donuts into the development.

Selectmen Discuss Four-Day
Work Week, Easement Proposal

WOODBURY - The Board of Selectmen, meeting Thursday, November 13, discussed a four-day work week and the Open Space and Land Preservation Committee's Orenaug Park easement proposal.

First Selectman Paul Hinckley said he will meet with department and union heads to discuss the four-day work week. He said no decision has been made yet, but the suggestion is to close certain town buildings on Friday.

Finance Board Seeks Access
to School Financial Records

OXFORD - Four of six members of the Board of Finance objected last week to an announcement by Chairman Jim Murphy that District Superintendent Dr. Judith Palmer was unwilling to allow the town's finance director "total" access to the Board of Education's financial records on a "read-only" basis.

The request was made because the finance director, Jim HIiva, and at least one other board member who had sought information from the school board's central office had experienced delays in obtaining it.

Developer Skips Mediation,
Mediator Finds for Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY - A Wednesday, November 12, mediation session between the town and Middlebury Land Associations, on an August 2006 agreement executed by former First Selectman Edward B. St. John pertaining to the development Longmeadow Drive, was canceled because Middlebury Land Associates developer, Nathan Kahn, did not deposit his share of the cost of the mediation and prepare a pre-mediation statement.

Safety of Senior Citizens:
Focus of Triad Ceremony in Oxford
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal was the keynote speaker at a Triad Ceremony at the Oxford Senior Center recently. Nearly 100 seniors attended the program, which had, as its objectives, promoting safety and addressing problems that senior citizens face. (Quirke photo)

OXFORD - In a candle-lighting ceremony at the town's new senior center, representatives of local law enforcement agencies, senior citizens, town and state officials and a local business pledged to work together to enhance the safety of older persons in the community.

The program, which was attended by nearly 100 seniors, was presented by Triad, a partnership of three organizations - law enforcement, senior citizens and community groups.

Roxbury Panel Asks Residents
to Participate in POCD Survey

ROXBURY - The Planning Commission asks residents to look for its postcard in the mail titled Community Opinion Survey.

The postcard will have instructions to guide residents to the Plan of Conservation and Development online survey located on the town's website.

This is the first time residents will be able to answer the POCD questionnaire online. Paper questionnaires are available at Town Hall, Minor Memorial Library and the Roxbury Senior Center.

Host Veterans' Day Ceremony

MONROE - American Legion posts from Monroe and Easton commemorated Veterans' Day, Tuesday, November 11, on the Stepney Green, Monroe.

Tony Unger, commander of the Charles L. Ruman Post 160 in Easton, was the master of ceremonies at the well-attended ceremony. Also on hand was Victor Yanosy, who commands the Sippin-Winspur Post 176 in Monroe.
